 Transmission switch out

Hey I have the choice of 3 different econoline vans to switch out transmission with one is a 62, 63, 64, does anybody know if these transmission are interchangeable with a 61. I have the, 6 cylinder 170, and was told it has the crash box tranny. Any info greatly appreciated.

Craig,all of those trannys will interchange. Any 61-64 model will be a direct bolt in. Personally I would use the non crash box( fully synchronized verion).

Possibly from the 62 but get the 64 or 63 to be safe. Look at the access plate on yours and you will notice its in another location on the synchronized ones.

I have a 65 pickup with three on the tree manual transmission and was wondering if anyone knows if a (relatively) easy swap to an automatic is possible. One of the newer trannies with overdrive would be best but I'm thinking a custom bellhousing (among other parts)would have to be made. :?

I cant help ya on the newer trannys but a stock 65-67 auto tranny is a direct bolt in if you can find one. Other trannys have a bottom mount whereas our Econos hang from the top.

It seems that my truck is geared too high in low gear and too low in high gear. Am I right in thinking I need a transmission with a lower first gear and I also need a rear end with higher gearing. It seems like she just has too much trouble getting going with any kind of a load on and then revs out way too soon. That's why I was thinking a later model automatic with overdrive. Or what?

What is your rear ratio? JMHO but most times the problem is in the rearend rather than the trans.
