I have people tell me that it's best to remove the engine from above, others say drop it out below. Which is best?

I have done this... best to drop the engine to the ground, trying to get the motor through the door was a PAIN! if you have a van with side doors you can go through them easy with a engine hoist.

Good luck!

I found through the passenger door to be very easy. When I was doing the 302 conversion I had the motor with trans in and out about 5 times while setting up the mounts. Very easy to do through the door opening.
